What is BEE Certification?
Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Certification is a regulatory compliance program introduced by the Government of India to promote energy efficiency and reduce electricity consumption across various sectors. It is administered by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body established under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and functioning under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
Established on 1st March 2002, BEE plays a vital role in developing policies and implementing initiatives that encourage the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, products, and practices. Through its Standards & Labelling (S&L) Programme, BEE helps consumers identify energy-efficient products while supporting manufacturers in improving product performance and sustainability.
BEE Certification is mandatory for several notified electrical appliances and equipment, while it remains voluntary for certain other product categories. Products covered under the scheme must undergo testing at NABL-accredited laboratories to determine their energy performance before receiving a BEE Star Rating.
The BEE Star Rating System classifies products on a scale of 1 Star to 5 Stars, with higher star ratings indicating superior energy efficiency and lower electricity consumption. This standardized labelling system enables consumers to compare products based on their energy performance, resulting in lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact.
By obtaining BEE Certification, manufacturers demonstrate compliance with Indian energy efficiency regulations, enhance product credibility, improve market competitiveness, and contribute to India’s national energy conservation objectives.
Objectives of BEE Registration
- Promote energy-efficient products and technologies.
- Reduce electricity consumption across industries and households.
- Enable consumers to identify energy-efficient products through Star Ratings.
- Support India’s energy conservation and environmental sustainability goals.
- Reduce carbon emissions and operational energy costs.
